I am the wind which breathes upon the sea,
I am the wave of the ocean,
I am the murmur of the billows,
I am the ox of the seven combats,
I am the vulture upon the rocks,
I am a beam of the sun,
I am the fairest of plants,
I am a wild boar in valor,
I am a salmon in the water,
I am a lake in the plain,
I am a word of science,
I am the point of the lance of battle,
I am the God who created in the head the fire.
Who is it who throws light into the meeting on the mountain?
Who announces the ages of the moon?
Who teaches the place where couches the sun? (If not I) – (The Mystery) (Spoken by Amairgin the Gael as he first set foot in Ireland - Translated by Douglas Hyde (folklorist and first president of the Republic of Ireland)

    Chapter 16: Lucky Charms

    The Evil Eye

Yule, the German celebration of the winter solstice, is also called Jul or Jol in Scandinavia. Hjul means “wheel” in Swedish and the festival was a celebration of the solstice as the “Wheel of the Year.” One can see the wheel imagery when one divides the zodiac into 12 houses. (1)

The Germanic god Thor from Old Norse myth, is a hammer wielding thunder/lightning/storm god who also has an association with oak trees. He is red-haired and red-bearded. His associated symbol and favorite possession is the hammer Mjöllnir (“Lightning”). His opponent and enemy is a sea serpent Jormungand that encircles the world, called Midgard. (2) Incidentally, numerous “hammers” of Thor have been found all over the areas of Scandinavia, Norway, Germany, and various other parts of Europe, dating from 800-1100 AD (59c). The hammer is obviously a symbol for the mushroom then, just as the axe is.

Thor’s father, Odin, is a half-giant. He’s a seeker and dispenser of wisdom and knowledge. He was a favorite god and helper of outlaws, and those cast out from society. Odin was known to have sacrificed himself on the World Tree for 9 days and hung there without nourishment. When this sacrifice was over, he perceived the runes into existence and stated: “Then I was fertilized and grew wise; From a word to a word I was led to a word, From a work to a work I was led to a work.” It is Odin who rules over Valhalla, the land of the dead and he is known to be a diviner and communicator with the dead. (3)

Hel, or Helle, a Norse goddess, the daughter of Loki, was appointed by Odin to rule over the underworld located in Niflheim. (4) Now we can see elements of Hades and the underworld from Greece alongside the judgment of souls like Egyptian Anubis.

Odin figures have turned up as well, depicting him as a shaman with bull horns, either shaped like a mushroom or holding one in his hand along with a lightning bolt in the other. (59f, g).
