I am thankful to Robert Graves for the early gems he found way back when nobody else was even looking in this direction. A fantastic point Graves brings our attention is a Cornish poem with Merddin/Merlin’s walk in the early morning with his black dog to seek the glain or magical snake-eggs, which Graves believes refers to a fossilized sea urchin. I find this incredible since he was just discussing mushrooms a few paragraphs back, but sometimes we are on a path of exploration and clues under our nose are not discovered until later. Regardless, he drew my attention to this point, and I would suggest the magical snake eggs, were in fact, mushrooms. (77) (77) White Goddess, p. 38 |
