(75g) The sarcophagus of King Pakal Kinich Janab Ruler of Palenque in the 7th century AD

The sarcophagus of King Pakal Kinich Janab, ruler of Palenque in the 7th century AD, features a worshipper laying on his back, in a seated position, while a giant mushroom sits atop him (75g). The mushroom is not easy to see unless you are looking for it, as it is easily hidden in the pictogram. This tomb engraving is a favorite among the “ancient alien” crowd who like to point to this and claim the person is sitting inside a spaceship. He might be ready to blast off, but I don’t think he’s sitting inside of any rocket ship. It was a redistribution of Aztecs that settled the area known as Nayarit, where we get an abundant quantity of figurines of the A. muscaria and mushroom variety. In fact, all over Mexico and Central and South America there is a tremendous selection to choose from in which to view. Numbering, I would estimate, in the thousands, c. 200 BC-300 AD. Most of these have mushroom heads that are quite obvious (82a, b, c) or red and white spotted bodies (83c).

Many of these have what scholars have always call “axes” in their hands as if they are preparing for some kind of “sacrifice” (83h, i). Since Greek times, the axe has represented the mushroom, and depicted on some of these figurines, the “axe” looks much more like a mushroom. Notice the banded or ridged headdresses.

Jalisco, just a little further south has its own vast array of mushroom artifacts dating from the same era, some of which look like mushroom people popping out of mushrooms hats (82c), or they appear to be holding a mushroom in their hands (82e; 84b, c).
