The saint is sitting in a chair, on a red cushion with white spots, in the middle pillar, which makes up the stem, and the angel above is in the arch portion which supplies the imagery of the cap of the mushroom. San Paolo - c. 1940 From the Sainte-Madeleine Church in Vézelay, France, c. 1130-45 AD, there are several stone sculptures on the pillars. A scene of the “Death of Absalom” features two mushrooms popping up (67a). The “Sacred Pagan Tree” is depicted about to be cut down, with a minister giving a warning to the fellow with the axe. The tree has a mushroom sprouting up on top (67b). Finally, “Profane Music and the Demon of Licentiousness” is pictured with a fellow playing a flute, a devil dancing, and two mushrooms growing up between them both (67c). |
