In the Codex Egberti, an image titled “Healing of the Blind man of Jericho,” c. 980–993 AD, shows some worshippers extending a hand out to a man sitting under a group of mushrooms, shaped somewhat like a tree (64l). This is typical of mushroom imagery we find in Christian churches.

Mushroom symbolism is also disguised within images of the crucifixion of Christ, where the shape is hidden within the background imagery, rather than the foreground (66b, c) or disguised in the red rims with ridges all around the heads of Jesus and the apostles (65e). Sometimes we see the mushrooms in the background, as holy sacraments growing up from the ground (65b) or in the red and white spotted couch and pants of the Three Wise Men (65j).
