Costa Rica also contains some interesting mushroom artifacts. A basalt stone monkey deity, c. 8000-1200 AD, has mushrooms stacked on his head (81h). A vase which has a bulbous top, with striations all around the base, when turned upside down reveals the more obvious mushroom symbolism (79e).![]() ![]() (81h) Basalt stone. Costa Rica c. 800-1200 AD ![]() (79e) Nicoya, Costa Rica c. 500-800 AD In South America and especially, Peru, we find a tremendous selection of mushroom related artifacts. Let’s begin with the “axes,” which are really mushrooms, of course. The axe is nonsense, really. If we look at the various designs of “tumi knives,” another misnomer, we see some of them shaped very much like mushrooms, especially when they are not upside down as they are usually shown. These are said to be burial objects, because some of them have been found in tombs. There is a Paracas silver gold avian crown finial c. 200 BC-400 AD (86a), a Tairona culture piece, c. 200-800 AD (86b), and an Inca bronze tumi from 1500 AD (86c). Apparently there used to be cloth attached to some of them as we see some attached on one in particular (86d), and yet others have had intricate and beautiful geometric designs engraved in them, which look very psychedelic I might add (86e). That rare ankh shape we saw in ancient Egypt previously on the relief of Shapur II at Taq-e Bostan from the time of 309-379 AD (37a), we see again on a Peruvian tumi (86g). There are also mushrooms metals that were used as money (86h) and the mushroom design led to tweezers being shaped the same (86i). A stone idol called the 10 Chumpis, features a mushroom above the image of deity (86f). |
